Two very different people search for “voltmeter”, and they want two completely different products.
The first wants a gauge to mount in a panel — something that permanently shows the voltage of a battery bank, a solar array or a supply rail. The second wants something to hold in their hand, and what they actually need is a multimeter.
That split also sets the price: a small DC panel module costs about $6, while a three-phase power meter runs past $300. Below, both sides with real products and what they cost.
Prices are as of August 2026 and reflect typical listings at major retailers. They move with promotions and stock; read them as level indicators, not fixed tags.
Types of voltmeter
Mini DC panel module. 0.28-0.56 inch LED display, two or three wires, usually DC 0-100 V. For battery banks, solar, bench supplies and hobby builds. The cheapest voltmeter there is.
Panel-mount digital voltmeter (AC). Square cutout or DIN-rail units showing single or three-phase mains voltage. The classic element of an electrical panel.
Panel-mount analogue voltmeter. Moving-coil needle. Cheap, needs no supply, shows fluctuation at a glance, low resolution. Still standard on generator panels.
Combined volt/amp meter. One case showing both voltage and current, often with a shunt for DC. Saves panel space, which is why it dominates the DIY solar and RV market.
Battery monitor. A voltmeter with a current shunt that also counts amp-hours and state of charge. Marine, RV and off-grid solar staple.
Power/energy meter. Voltage, current, power, power factor, frequency and kWh in one panel unit, usually with Modbus. Not called a voltmeter, but it is what most industrial installs actually fit.
Non-contact voltage tester (pen). Shows whether a conductor is live without touching it. Gives no number, only present/absent. Cheap and handy — but not proof on its own.

Watch the wiring: three-wire modules need a separate supply; two-wire modules power themselves from the line they measure but usually cannot read below about 4-4.5 V. For battery monitoring pick two-wire; for low-voltage bench circuits pick three-wire.
$20 - 80: panel-mount AC voltmeters

Choose on three things: cutout size (48×48, 72×72, 96×96 mm or DIN modules), phase count and input range. Fitting the wrong cutout means re-machining the panel door.

For solar and RV builds these are the sensible purchase: a bare voltmeter tells you almost nothing about a battery’s actual state of charge, whereas amp-hour counting does.

These are not proof that a circuit is dead. They work capacitively, so they can trigger from an adjacent live conductor and can fail to trigger inside shielded cable or metal conduit. For a real determination use a two-pole voltage tester or a meter with a LoZ mode, which loads the circuit and collapses ghost voltage.
Analogue panel voltmeters
Square analogue AC voltmeters typically sell for $15-45, cheaper than their digital equivalents. They stay in use because they need no supply, they show fluctuation as visible needle movement, and they are immune to electrical noise. Generator and switchgear panels still fit them by default.
Choosing the right voltmeter
1. AC or DC? The single most important question. Wiring a DC module to an AC line destroys it instantly. The label says “DC 0-100 V” or “AC 80-500 V” plainly.
2. Range. 0-500 V covers mains; 0-100 V covers most battery banks; a solar string can exceed 600 V DC and needs a different class of product entirely.
3. Cutout. Standard square cutouts are 48×48, 72×72 and 96×96 mm; DIN-rail modules are sized in 17.5 mm units. Measure before you order.
4. Phase count. A single-phase meter shows one phase only. To watch all three you need a three-phase unit or a selector switch.
5. Supply. Some meters self-power from the measured line; others need an auxiliary supply. Design the panel around that.
6. Accuracy class. Panel meters are usually class 0.5 or 1. If anything downstream is billed or audited, check the class and calibration status.
7. Communications. If you might want remote monitoring, buy a unit with RS-485/Modbus now — it cannot be added later.
Five common mistakes
- Wiring a DC module to an AC circuit. The most frequent and most expensive error.
- Ordering the wrong cutout size. 96×96 will not drop into a 72×72 hole.
- Treating a silent non-contact tester as “no voltage”. It misleads inside conduit and shielded cable.
- Assuming a single-phase meter watches all three phases. Imbalance on the other two stays invisible.
- Shopping for a voltmeter when you need a handheld. If it leaves the panel, the right product is a multimeter — cheaper and more useful.

What voltmeter for a solar system? String voltages routinely exceed 100 V DC, so use a meter rated for the actual open-circuit voltage, or read it from the charge controller. Cheap 0-100 V modules are not suitable.
Does a voltmeter need calibrating? Not for personal or indicative use. For billing, compliance or reported measurements, yes — from an accredited lab.
Can one three-phase voltmeter show all three voltages? Three-phase models can. With a single-phase meter you need a phase selector switch, and then you see them one at a time.
Why is my voltmeter module reading wrong? Usually one of three things: the two-wire/three-wire supply wired incorrectly, operating outside the stated range, or an uncalibrated cheap module. Many have a small trimmer on the back for adjustment.
Do I have to fit a voltmeter in a panel? Not required, but on three-phase panels it is the quickest way to see phase imbalance and voltage drop, which is why industrial panels fit them as standard.
