That spread is not brand tax. Four technical choices explain almost all of it, and getting them wrong is how people end up with a $45 meter that reads zero on a perfectly healthy solar string:

  • The sensing element in the jaw — a current transformer (AC only) or a Hall-effect sensor (AC and DC).
  • True RMS or averaging — how honestly the meter handles the distorted waveforms that VFDs, LED drivers and switch-mode supplies put on every modern branch circuit.
  • The CAT safety category — CAT II, CAT III or CAT IV, and the voltage printed beside it.
  • Jaw resolution and jaw size — whether the meter can see 2 mA of leakage or only whole amps, and whether it closes around 4/0 service conductors.

How a clamp meter works

A conventional ammeter sits in series with the load: you kill the power, cut into the conductor and let the whole circuit current flow through the meter. On a 200 A service that is not possible with a handheld instrument. A clamp meter never touches the circuit — every current-carrying conductor is wrapped in a magnetic field, and the jaw reads that field and converts it back into amps.

Two sensing technologies live inside those jaws. Current transformer (CT) jaws treat the conductor as a one-turn primary winding, and transformers only respond to changing fields, so a CT clamp measures AC only — cheap, rugged and drift-free, which is why the $175 Fluke 323 is still AC-only.[1] Hall-effect jaws use a semiconductor that responds to a steady field too, so they read AC and DC — at the cost of an offset that drifts with temperature, which is why every DC measurement starts with the ZERO button and empty jaws.

An AC-only clamp reads zero on DC — and it is not broken. Put a CT-jaw meter around a battery cable, a PV string in a combiner box, a DC brushless motor lead or the DC side of an inverter and the display sits at 0.0 A while hundreds of amps flow through the jaw. Before you condemn a string, check whether the jaw is marked AC/DC or only A~.

One distinction gets confused constantly: True RMS and AC/DC are two independent features. The Fluke 323 is True RMS but AC-only. A $40 Hall meter reads DC but averages AC. The Klein CL800 is both. “True RMS” in a listing tells you nothing about whether the jaw sees DC.

The six things that set the price

1. Sensing element. Expect a $35-60 premium for AC/DC at the same brand and amp rating — Klein’s own line shows it, AC-only CL120 at $64.98 versus AC/DC CL390 at $99.97.

2. True RMS. An averaging meter assumes a clean 60 Hz sine and multiplies by a fixed constant. Feed it the chopped current of a VFD-driven condenser fan or a dimmed LED circuit and it reads 20-40% low. That conversion is the line between the $65 and the $110 tier.

3. CAT category — the safety line, not a feature. CAT ratings describe how much transient energy the meter survives at a given point in the system: CAT II at receptacles and plug-connected loads, CAT III at load centers, feeders, busbars and hardwired equipment (the minimum for opening a dead front), CAT IV at the service entrance, meter socket and utility drop. The Fluke 323’s CAT III 600 V / CAT IV 300 V is legal at a residential panel but not on the line side of the meter base.[1] US clamp meters are listed to UL 61010-1 with UL 61010-2-032 for the clamp itself; without a UL or ETL mark, the number on the case is decoration.

4. Jaw opening. A 1.0 in jaw handles branch circuits, but a 200 A residential service uses 4/0 aluminum SE cable and needs a 1.3 in jaw like the Milwaukee 2237-20. Past that you stop clamping and start wrapping: a flexible iFlex probe goes around busbars and parallel runs no rigid jaw will reach.

5. Resolution and the low end. Most clamps resolve to 0.1 A and get unreliable below about 0.5 A — useless for leakage work, where the interesting numbers are the 4-6 mA trip band of a Class A GFCI under NEC 210.8. A dedicated leakage clamp resolves to 1 µA and shields its jaws so the adjacent conductor’s field does not swamp the signal.[2]

6. The extras that earn their keep. Inrush capture, DC millivolts, a K-type thermocouple input, capacitance for run and start caps, a VFD low-pass filter, LoZ to kill ghost voltage, NCV and Bluetooth logging. Inrush and capacitance repay their cost fastest in HVAC work; logging matters when NEC 220.87 lets you size an EV charger against recorded maximum demand instead of a paper load calculation.

Fluke’s list prices on its own site sit noticeably higher — $407.99 for the 902 FC, $699.99 for the 376 FC, $877.99 for the 393 FC — so buying through a test-equipment distributor is worth $100-160 on these models.[3][4] The 393 FC deserves a specific note: US commercial and utility-scale PV now runs 1500 V DC strings, and a CAT III 1000 V meter is not rated for that.[5]

Notice how the pricing inverts: a leakage clamp that stops at 60 A costs more than a 1000 A general-purpose meter. You are paying for the shielded jaw and the noise floor, not the range. The Fluke 368 FC lists at $1,079.99 direct.[2]

How to use a clamp meter, step by step

  1. 1
    Select the function first. A~ for AC amps, A⎓ for DC amps. On a manual-ranging meter start high and step down. Confirm it is on amps, not volts, before the jaw goes near a conductor.
  2. 2
    On DC, press ZERO with the jaws closed and empty. Hold the meter in the orientation you will actually use, close the jaw, press ZERO, wait for 0.0. Skip it and a solar string reading can be off by several amps in either direction.
  3. 3
    Clamp exactly ONE conductor. Hot and neutral carry equal and opposite current, so their fields cancel — clamp both and a fully loaded circuit reads near zero. You cannot read Romex or SE cable through the jacket; a single conductor has to be isolated, which is why real current measurements happen with the dead front off.

    Close the jaw fully and center the conductor. An unlatched jaw leaves an air gap in the magnetic path and reads low. Off-center placement typically costs 1-2%, which is several amps on a 400 A reading.

    Stay clear of neighboring conductors. Inside a load center everything is bundled. Pull the conductor a few inches clear of its neighbors, and keep the jaw away from transformers, contactor coils and motor housings.

    For leakage, do the opposite: clamp hot AND neutral together. On a 120 V circuit both conductors in one jaw; on 240 V both hots and the neutral. What the meter reads is the current not returning through the circuit conductors — above 4-6 mA that is what trips a Class A GFCI.

    Use INRUSH on anything with a motor. A condenser fan or compressor pulls locked-rotor current for a fraction of a second. Normal averaging misses it; inrush arms the meter, waits for the step and captures the peak so you can compare it with the LRA on the nameplate.

Six mistakes people actually make

  1. Clamping the whole cable. The most common error by a wide margin, and the most misleading, because it returns a plausible near-zero instead of an obvious fault.
  2. Expecting DC from an AC-only meter. Battery banks, PV strings, EV DC buses and brushless motors all read 0.0 A on a CT jaw.
  3. Skipping ZERO on DC. The offset can exceed a full amp, inventing a phantom parasitic draw or hiding a real one.
  4. Reading small currents on a big meter. A 600 A clamp resolving 0.1 A cannot measure a 15 mA appliance leak. Use a line splitter with a 10× scale for cord-connected loads, or a leakage clamp.
  5. Trusting an averaging meter on non-linear loads. VFD equipment, LED lighting and computer supplies all draw distorted current; without True RMS the answer is systematically low.
  6. Taking the CAT rating on faith. “CAT III 1000 V” with no UL or ETL listing has not been tested to survive a panelboard transient. Buy the listing, not the silkscreen.

Most clamp meters above roughly $100 include multimeter functions through test leads, so for building wiring the practical answer is a True RMS clamp meter with leads. A multimeter remains better for electronics and precision low-current work.

What the US brand landscape looks like

Fluke sets the reference — the meters that specifications and utility procurement assume, supported by every calibration lab in the country, at 30-60% over an equivalent Klein.

Klein Tools owns the US electrical trade on distribution alone: CL120, CL700 and CL800 sit on the shelf at every Home Depot, and the CL800 delivers AC/DC True RMS, LoZ and capacitance at a price Fluke does not compete with.

Southwire comes at it from the wire side through supply houses and big-box stores; the MaintenancePRO 23030T and the 21510N are the models you meet most, usually bundled with worklights and third-hand probe holders.

Amprobe is the original clamp-meter name — “Amprobe” was a product before it was a brand — and now sits under the same corporate roof as Fluke. It is also one of the very few sources for a genuine analog clamp in the US, the RS-1007 PRO.

Milwaukee sells to red-toolbox loyalty; the 2237-20 is a plain 600 A AC meter whose 1.3 in jaw is the real selling point on service work. Extech (now Teledyne FLIR) is strongest in HVAC and facilities maintenance, while UNI-T and AstroAI dominate the sub-$60 Amazon tier — credible for low-voltage DC, but without the third-party safety listing you want on the line side of anything.

Buying checklist

  • AC only, or AC/DC? Battery, solar, EV or automotive work makes a Hall jaw non-negotiable.
  • Is it True RMS? In any building wired or renovated in the last twenty years, yes.
  • What CAT rating, at what voltage, from which lab? CAT III 600 V minimum for panel work, CAT IV 600 V at the service entrance, CAT III 1500 V for large PV — with a UL or ETL mark.
