Why is a first-flush diverter essential? The first water off the roof carries the heaviest load of bird droppings, dust, pollen and built-up dirt. A first-flush diverter channels that initial runoff into a separate chamber, so only the cleaner water that follows fills the barrel.[2] Size the chamber at roughly ~4 litres for every 10 m² of roof; it drains slowly through a small outlet at the bottom over a few hours.
How is rainwater stored?
A good storage container (barrel/tank) should have these features:
