KPop Demon Hunters Ships Explained: Rujinu & More
Compiled and fact-checked from cited sources, reviewed by our editorial team.
KPop Demon Hunters (2025, Netflix) is an animated musical that pits HUNTR/X — a girl group who are pop idols by day and demon hunters by night — against the demon boy band Saja Boys. Almost the moment the film dropped, the thing the fandom talked about most was “ships”: which pairs of characters we want to see together. This guide first makes clear what a “ship” actually is, then walks through the characters, the most popular ships and their ship names, and what is canon versus what is pure fan invention.
What does “ship” mean?
Ship is short for the English word relationship, and it is fandom slang. It means imagining or supporting two (or more) characters in a work as a romantic couple. The verb form is “shipping”: saying “I ship these two” means “I want them to be together.” Fans usually give each ship a short ship name that blends the two characters’ names (e.g. Rumi + Jinu = Rujinu). If a ship actually happens in the film it is called canon; if it exists only in fan imagination it is called fanon.

Side characters: Gwi-Ma (the demon king, the villain), Celine (the mentor who raised Rumi, a Sunlight Sisters member) and Bobby (HUNTR/X's manager). Bobby also turns up frequently in fan ships.
The most popular ship: Rujinu (Rumi × Jinu)
The fandom’s undisputed number one is Rujinu — that is, HUNTR/X leader Rumi and Saja Boys leader Jinu. This forbidden closeness between the leaders of two enemy groups forms the emotional backbone of the film; so much so that even Sony Animation posted winking nods to the ship on social media.[3]
So is it canon? Here is the crucial distinction: the film builds clear romantic tension between the two but never seals the relationship with a kiss. According to character designer Marion Bordeyne, a kissing scene was pitched but left out of the final cut; creative director Maggie Kang said they were deliberately going for a sense of “restraint” between the pair.[5] In the finale, Jinu takes the blow meant for Rumi, sacrificing himself and dying; he tells her that she gave him strength.[4] In other words, Rujinu is a semi-canon ship: “never confirmed with a kiss, but emotionally more than real.”
Other popular ships and their ship names

Femslash ships within HUNTR/X
Most people searching for a “Mira ship” or a “Zoey ship” mean the in-group pairings. Between HUNTR/X’s three members (Rumi, Mira, Zoey) you get the Rumira, Zoemira and Zoerumi femslash ships; Polytrix, which brings all three together, is the fandom’s most beloved “OT3” (threesome) fantasy. None of these are shown romantically in the film — they are fan readings that grow out of the group’s friendship.
Are the ships canon or fanon?
In short: the relationship with the strongest romantic charge in the film is Rujinu, and even that is never made official with a kiss. All the remaining ships (Rumira, Mirabby, Zoeystery, Polytrix, Sajatrix and the BL pairings) are fanon — they live only in the fans’ imagination. A ship’s popularity does not make it canon, and the fandom’s “tier lists” are not official either; they simply reflect community taste.
