How to Polish Car Glass and Remove Scratches

Test this first: will your scratch come out?

On clean, dry glass, drag the tip of your fingernail across the scratch at a right angle:

- It’s applied to a felt pad.

The mark on your glass isn’t always a “scratch.” To pick the right method, first identify what you’re actually dealing with:

Step by step: polishing with cerium oxide

- Mask off your work area. Tape over surrounding paint, rubber trim and plastics; don’t let slurry sit on them.
- Mix the slurry. Blend cerium oxide roughly 2:1 (powder:water) into a thick paste. Soak the felt pad in water first, too.[3]
- Work in the shade with cool glass. This is the most critical safety step (see the heat warning below).
- Rub in small circles with light-to-moderate pressure. Work by hand or with a low-speed machine (drill or polisher). If you use a machine, start slow and never lock it at one high speed — managing heat is everything. (Sources suggest a range of about 600–1500 rpm; there’s no single right number, so adjust to the heat.)
- Keep the surface and pad constantly wet. The slurry must never dry out. Dried slurry doesn’t polish and generates excess heat.[3]
- Wipe and check periodically. Clean the area and look at the scratch; repeat if needed. Patience works better than pressure.
Heat warning (it can crack the glass): Polishing generates heat through friction. Work on dry, hot glass and the stress between the heated spot and the cooler surrounding area can crack the pane. The rule is clear: don't work in the sun, keep the glass constantly wet and cool, and never dwell on one spot for long.
Water, hard-water and rain spots: this isn’t a scratch
Most of those white, cloudy rings that show up in the light — the ones that don’t wipe off — aren’t scratches at all, they’re mineral deposits (hard water, limescale, dried acid-rain residue). You have to dissolve the spot before you even think about polishing:
- Light spots: Spray an equal mix of white vinegar + distilled water onto a cloth and wipe. If it’s stubborn, let it dwell 30 seconds to a minute and repeat. Don’t leave it sitting on the glass for long.
- Hardened spots: First lift the mineral crust off the surface with a clay bar, then wipe with the vinegar solution. Polish with cerium oxide afterward if needed.[4]

Toothpaste and baking soda: do they work?
The internet’s favorite “home remedy,” toothpaste, does contain a mild abrasive, so it can produce a cosmetic improvement on very shallow micro-scratches your nail can’t catch at all. But:
- It isn’t the main method. Its effect is nowhere near cerium oxide, and it’s completely useless on a deep scratch.
- You need the right toothpaste: not a gel, but a mildly gritty/whitening type.
- Baking soda is likewise a very mild abrasive; don’t expect a miracle.
So toothpaste and baking soda are “better than nothing,” but if you genuinely care about your glass, the right tool is cerium oxide.
Windshield warning: don’t gamble with your view
This is the most important safety section in the guide. The windshield is the optical surface a driver looks through, and keeping it flat as glass is vital. Over-polish one area and you create a dish there, so the glass acts like a lens and bends the image (this is called “lensing”).
